Version 0.1.0-preview

Download

Two downloads. The engine, which is one archive per platform, and the restored artwork, which is shared by both and is much the larger of the two. Unpack them into the same folder, give it the game data you already own, and run it. Nothing is installed, nothing is written to your Gabriel Knight 3 installation, and removing the folder removes the whole thing.

Step one

The engine

Required. Roughly a hundred megabytes, and it plays the game on the original 1999 artwork on its own.

Windows

win-x64

ZIP

Windows 10 or later, 64 bit, with a Vulkan 1.3 capable graphics driver.

GK3Reborn-win-x64.zip  · 54,5 MB · 22 August 2026

Linux

linux-x64

ZIP

A 64 bit distribution with a Vulkan 1.3 capable driver and the Mesa or vendor loader installed.

This one is not available for download at the moment. Check back, or build it yourself from source.

Step two

The restored artwork

This is the part that makes the game look like 2026 rather than 1999: colour textures rebuilt at 2K and 4K, the material channels the original never had, the rebuilt models and the converted cinematics. It is optional, it is the same download whichever platform you are on, and it is by far the biggest thing here. Leaving it out costs you the restoration, not the game.

Restored artwork

Reborn.rebarn, for Windows and Linux alike

ZIP

The restored colour textures at 2K and 4K, the rebuilt models and the converted cinematics. Without this the game runs on the original 1999 artwork.

Material channels

RebornMaterials.rebarn, optional

ZIP

Normal, roughness, metalness and height maps, which is what the lighting and the ray traced modes read. Large, and safe to leave out on a small disk.

What the artwork pack adds

  • Colour textures restored to 2K, and 4K where the surface earns it.
  • Rebuilt models and modernised characters.
  • The cinematics, converted to H.264 so they play at all.

What the material pack adds

  • Normal and height maps, so lit surfaces have relief instead of a flat picture.
  • Roughness and metalness, which is what tells stone from varnish from brass.
  • The channels the ray traced lighting, shadows and reflections read.

Leaving one out

The engine treats both packs as optional and reads whichever are present. Without the material pack the picture gets plainer, not broken. Without either, you are playing on the 1999 art, which is exactly what the original shipped.

Setup

Five steps

  1. Unpack the engine archive

Put it anywhere you like, for example D:\Games\GK3Reborn or ~/games/gk3reborn. It does not need to sit inside your Gabriel Knight 3 installation, and it must not replace it.

  2. Create a Data folder

Next to the executable, create a folder called Data.

  3. Copy the eight brn archives into it

They are in the Data folder of your own Gabriel Knight 3 installation. Copy these eight files and nothing else:

    ambient.brn common.brn core.brn day1.brn day123.brn day2.brn day23.brn day3.brn

The .bik and .avi movie files are not needed. Their content is in the artwork download, already converted to a format that modern machines can play.

  4. Unpack the artwork beside the executable

The content downloads hold Reborn.rebarn and RebornMaterials.rebarn. Both belong in the same folder as the executable, not in Data. Skip this step and the game still runs, on the original artwork.

  5. Run it

On Windows run GK3Reborn.exe. On Linux mark it executable with chmod +x GK3Reborn the first time, then run ./GK3Reborn. The packs are picked up automatically when they are there.

How the folder should look

GK3Reborn/ GK3Reborn.exe Reborn.rebarn from the artwork download RebornMaterials.rebarn from the material download libs/ Data/ ambient.brn common.brn core.brn day1.brn day123.brn day2.brn day23.brn day3.brn

Any .rebarn file beside the executable is read, in name order, and the last one wins. That is all a later patch or a mod pack needs to be.

You need to own Gabriel Knight 3.

GK3Reborn contains none of the original game's data and will not start without an installation to read. The game is still sold:

Before you start

What you need

  • A copy of Gabriel Knight 3, from Steam, GOG or the original discs.
  • Windows 10 or later, 64 bit, or a 64 bit Linux distribution.
  • A graphics card and driver with Vulkan 1.3. Ray tracing is optional and is switched off on hardware that does not report it.
  • Disk space for what you take: the engine and the game archives are about a gigabyte together, and the two content packs are several gigabytes each.
  • en-US game data. Other languages are not validated yet.

If it does not start

The usual causes

  • The Data folder is missing, is spelled differently, or sits somewhere other than beside the executable.
  • One of the eight archives was not copied. All eight are needed.
  • The .rebarn packs ended up inside Data rather than beside the executable, so the game runs on the 1999 art and looks unchanged.
  • The graphics driver is older than Vulkan 1.3. Updating the driver is usually enough.
  • On Linux, the file was never marked executable.

The engine reports what it could not find, by file and by path, rather than failing silently.
